In South Central Kentucky, experts emphasize the vital role that bees play in the environment, particularly in plant life and food production. Local beekeepers are working to spread awareness of the critical importance of these insects, especially as challenges like climate change and pesticide exposure continue to threaten bee populations.
The Importance of Bees for Food Production
Dr. Robert Whitlow, past president of the Barren County Beekeeper Association, explains the significance of bees in food production. “More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of bees,” Whitlow said. “Obviously, we know they produce honey, which is a wonderful food, but I don’t think we emphasize enough the importance of just the fact of pollination. It’s really been studied that one-third of all the food in the United States is produced by pollination.”
The role of bees extends far beyond honey production—they are essential for pollinating crops that make up a large portion of the food supply.
Decline in Bee Populations
Unfortunately, the bee population has been declining across the country, primarily due to climate change and exposure to harmful pesticides. Dr. Whitlow highlights a concerning trend: “Almost half of all hives that started the year were not there come spring of this year. So we try to help them proliferate by dividing and creating new hives. But it’s a whole lot that’s working against them.”
Beekeepers are working tirelessly to help support and grow the bee population, but external factors continue to present challenges.

Dr. Whitlow encourages the community to take action when encountering bees, particularly swarms. He suggests contacting local extension offices if a bee swarm is spotted, instead of resorting to harmful pesticide sprays. This simple action can help protect local bee populations and contribute to their preservation.
