A man from Madisonville is facing legal trouble after police say he used fake military documents to join a veterans’ organisation and even got elected to a leadership role.
What Happened
According to police, the case started in January when the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) noticed issues in documents submitted by James Werfelman.
The document in question was a DD-214, which is an official certificate given to US military members after they leave active duty. Officials say there were discrepancies in his paperwork.
How the Issue Was Found
Police said Werfelman had already been elected to an officer position within the VFW. However, after reviewing his documents, the organisation found that he was not eligible for membership.
When the VFW raised concerns, authorities say Werfelman submitted another document claiming he had received a Combat Action Ribbon.
Allegations Against Him
Investigators say Werfelman never received the ribbon and used forged documents to support his claims. Based on this, he is now facing:
- One charge of forgery
The case is currently under legal process.
