A group is suing to have London Mayor Randall Weddle's name removed from the vote due to residence requirements

A group of voters in London, Kentucky has filed a case questioning whether the current mayor can legally stay on the ballot for the next election.

Residency dispute in mayoral race

A group of voters, led by James Phelps, has filed a case in the Laurel County Circuit Court against Randall Weddle.

They claim Weddle does not meet the residency requirement to run for mayor. According to the filing, Weddle lives on East Highway 552 in Keavy, which is outside the city limits of London, Kentucky.

Address concerns raised

The complaint says Weddle listed an address on East Fifth Street in London when filing his candidacy. However, the voters argue that people living near that address are ready to testify that he has never stayed there.

What the law says

Under Kentucky law, a candidate must live within the city for at least one year before the election to qualify for the mayor’s race. The voters say Weddle does not meet this rule.

What the voters want

The group has asked the court to:

  • Declare Weddle not a valid candidate
  • Order the county clerk to remove his name from the 2026 ballot
  • Or ensure that any votes cast for him are not counted

Other legal issues

Weddle is also facing four felony charges related to campaign finance violations. These include claims of breaking contribution limits and spending rules. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
