A federal prisoner in McCreary County was found guilty of attempted murder

A New York man already serving time in a federal prison in Kentucky has now been convicted of attempted murder after a violent attack on his cellmate. The case was decided after a two-day trial in London, Kentucky.

What Happened

According to officials, the incident took place in 2019 at the United States Penitentiary McCreary. The accused, Mufid Elfgeeh, had asked for a private cell, but his request was not approved.

Following this, Elfgeeh attacked his cellmate using a makeshift weapon. Reports say he stabbed the victim more than 30 times during the assault.

How the Attack Was Stopped

Prison staff tried multiple times to stop the attack, but Elfgeeh did not listen to their orders. Authorities used several methods to control the situation, including:

  • Pepper spray
  • Vapor grenades
  • Foam baton strikes
  • Pepper balls and other non-lethal force

Despite these efforts, the attack continued until specially equipped staff entered the cell, removed the weapon, and restrained him.

Court Decision and Sentence

After reviewing the case, the court found Elfgeeh guilty of attempted murder. He now faces up to 20 additional years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for September 1.

Background of the Accused

Elfgeeh was already serving a long prison sentence before this incident. In 2016, he was sentenced to 270 months in prison for attempting to support the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
