The Claiborne County Board of Education has approved a key decision that will shape the future of its school system. During its April meeting, the board voted to extend the contract of Director of Schools Meredith Arnold and increase her salary, sparking both support and concern among members.
Contract Extension and Salary Increase
The board approved a one-year extension of Arnold’s contract, now running through June 30, 2028. Along with this, her salary was raised from $113,000 to $138,000.
The vote on the salary increase was close:
- In favour (4 votes): Wade Breeding, Dan Pearman, Linda Fultz, Shane Bunch
- Against (3 votes): Juanita Honeycut, Miranda Adams, Malinda Munsey
However, the decision to extend her contract further through 2030 was approved unanimously.
Why Some Members Supported the Raise
Supporters of the decision highlighted the positive progress seen in the district under Arnold’s leadership.
Board member Dan Pearman pointed out improvements such as:
- Better student attendance
- Higher test scores
- Rising graduation rates
- New programs like job shadowing and apprenticeships
- Expansion of Career and Technical Education (CTE) facilities
He also stressed the importance of having an experienced leader to manage the district’s $66 million budget.
Competitive Salary and Retention Concerns
Board member Shane Bunch shared that Arnold had received interest from another district offering a similar or higher salary.
He added that:
- The average salary for school directors in Tennessee ranges from $146,000 to $177,000
- Keeping Arnold helps maintain stability and continued progress
He also credited her leadership for helping the district meet state requirements, including salary increases for teachers.
Connection to State Policy
The district had to adjust teacher salaries following a mandate from Bill Lee, which raised the minimum starting teacher pay from $35,000 to $50,000.
Board members said Arnold played a key role in managing funds to meet this requirement while maintaining balance in the budget.
Other Decisions Taken in the Meeting
Apart from the contract and salary discussion, the board also approved several other important items:
- FY 2026-27 budget (including Arnold’s raise)
- Increased funding for paraprofessional flexible spending accounts
- Participation in the TN Together Survey
- Introduction of released time courses for high school students
New Additions and Approvals
The board also made decisions to improve school activities and infrastructure:
- Approved new textbooks across multiple subjects
- Allowed the creation of a volleyball team at Cumberland Gap High School
- Declared outdated equipment as surplus
Students and school groups were also recognised for their achievements during the academic year.
Why This Decision Matters
This decision reflects a balance between financial responsibility and leadership stability. While some concerns were raised about the salary increase, others believe strong leadership is key to maintaining progress in education.
