The Historic Harlan Museum recently celebrated the 100th birthday of legendary broadcaster Cawood Ledford with a special event that brought the community together for a day of reflection, memories, and heartfelt tributes.
A Day of Remembrance and Reflection
Throughout the day, visitors explored the museum’s Cawood Ledford exhibit, revisiting his monumental impact on Kentucky sports and Appalachian culture. Ledford, a native of Harlan County, spent 39 years as the radio voice of University of Kentucky sports before his passing 25 years ago.
Special Tributes and Personal Touches
One of the highlights of the celebration was a special birthday message from former UK Coach Rick Pitino, which added a personal and meaningful touch to the event.
Guests with ties to the Ledford family also attended, including Jaycee Carter, whose great-grandmother was first cousins with Ledford’s mother. These connections helped make the event feel deeply personal and rooted in Harlan County’s history.
Honoring a Legacy
The celebration was a fitting tribute to Ledford’s enduring legacy, with his voice continuing to resonate across generations. The day served as a reminder of the profound influence he had on the community and his lasting place in the hearts of Kentuckians.
