Fire crews have made strong progress in controlling a large wildfire in eastern Kentucky, though some restrictions are still in place.
Wildfire mostly contained
Officials from the U.S. Forest Service managing the Daniel Boone National Forest said the 1,100-acre Alum Fire in McCreary County, Kentucky is now more than 93% contained.
Trails reopening
As conditions improved, a closed section of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail was reopened to the public on April 24. However, officials confirmed that Alum Trail remains closed for safety reasons.
Ongoing firefighting efforts
Fire crews are still working in areas between the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and KY-27 near Alum Boat Dock and Yahoo Falls.
A helicopter is being used to support firefighting operations from the air.
Public safety warning
Authorities have warned people not to fly drones near the fire zone. Officials say:
- Drones can interfere with helicopter operations
- Aerial support may be stopped if drones are spotted
- This could slow down firefighting efforts
Community support
Firefighters received support from the local community, including a home-cooked barbecue meal provided by American Legion Post 115.
Burn ban in effect
A burn ban remains active in several areas, including:
- Edmonson
- Knott
- Letcher
- Logan
- Marion
- McCreary
- Morgan
- Spencer
- Warren
- Wayne counties
It also applies to the cities of Harlan, Kentucky and Loyall, Kentucky.
