A family in Somerset is going through a difficult time after losing their father in a tragic crash and then facing a burglary at his home just days after his funeral.
Fatal Crash Details
According to reports, Hollis Smith suffered a medical emergency on April 18 while driving home from his grandson’s baseball game.
Police said he crossed the centre line on Lake Cumberland Road in Rockcastle County and collided head-on with a semi-truck. He was declared dead at the scene.
His son, Matt Smith, shared that Hollis was a farmer, teacher, and basketball coach who spent many years serving the local community.
Break-In After Funeral
Just days after the funeral, the family faced another shock. On Wednesday around 3 p.m., three suspects reportedly arrived at the home in a U-Haul truck.
According to Matt Smith, the suspects circled a nearby church several times before breaking into the house and stealing jewellery.
Investigation Underway
The Kentucky State Police are now investigating the case. Security cameras at the home captured the suspects, and enhanced images have been released to help identify them.
Matt Smith believes the timing of the burglary may have been intentional, making the situation even more painful for the family.
Community Support and Response
Despite everything, the family has received strong support from the community, with people helping improve their home security.
Matt Smith said his father believed in forgiveness, and the family is trying to follow that path even during this tough time.
