The Kentucky State Police have confirmed that a domestic violence incident involving a knife in Pathfork on Saturday evening has resulted in the death of 50-year-old Mary Clayborn.
Incident Details
At 6:57 p.m., troopers and deputies with the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department, along with Lifeguard Ambulance Service, were dispatched to a residence at 6063 KY 72 following reports of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, law enforcement made contact with a family member of the suspected attacker, who informed officers that two individuals were still inside the residence.
Suspect and Victim Identification
Troopers entered the home and encountered Michael Howard, 36, of Pathfork, who was identified as Clayborn’s boyfriend. Howard was detained without incident and placed inside a KSP cruiser.
Shortly after, a trooper found Clayborn inside the home, sitting in a chair and suffering from serious, life-threatening knife wounds. Preliminary investigations suggest that Howard had stabbed Clayborn in the chest and neck.
Medical Response and Fatalities
Troopers provided immediate medical aid to Clayborn to control the bleeding until EMS personnel arrived. Although emergency responders initially planned to airlift her for treatment, she was instead transported to Harlan ARH Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Arrest and Investigation
Michael Howard was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Harlan County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing, with Detectives Chelsea Hanson and Jake Middleton leading the case.
Harlan County Coroner Derrick Noe was called to the scene, and an autopsy is scheduled at the State Medical Examiner’s Office, with toxicology results pending.
