A serious child safety case has come to light in Wayne County, where a mother has been arrested after disturbing allegations involving her children. Authorities say quick action helped ensure the children were made safe.

Incident Reported at Judicial Center

According to Tim Catron, the incident happened on April 28, 2026, at the parking area of the Wayne County Judicial Center.

The Wayne County 911 Dispatch Center received a complaint about a woman yelling at and pulling a child inside a parked vehicle. Multiple law enforcement units quickly responded to the scene.

Traffic Stop and Shocking Discovery

As officers arrived, the vehicle began leaving the parking lot. Sheriff Catron stopped the vehicle with help from deputies, including Valis Smedley and Nick Bertram.

Inside the vehicle, officers found four children. Two of them had duct tape placed across their mouths and nose areas. Deputy Bertram immediately removed the tape to ensure the children could breathe safely.

Mother’s Statement to Police

During questioning, the accused, Anna Bencosme, reportedly told officers that the children were hers and claimed she had the right to discipline them in that way. She also stated that this method was something she used regularly.

Charges Filed Against the Accused

Following the investigation at the scene, Deputy Smedley arrested Bencosme and filed multiple serious charges:

  • Two counts of first-degree strangulation (domestic violence)
  • Two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor
  • Two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment

She was taken to the Wayne County Detention Center.

Children Placed in Safe Custody

Authorities confirmed that all four children were safely removed from the situation and placed in the custody of their father. Ensuring their immediate safety was a top priority for officials.

Further Investigation Underway

The case has also been referred to the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services, which has started its own investigation into the children’s well-being.

The Monticello Police Department assisted at the scene, along with court security officers.
