A Lexington woman has been found guilty in an animal cruelty case after a dog was discovered in poor condition during a welfare check.

Woman Found Guilty of Animal Cruelty

Lakesha R. Coney, 49, was convicted of second-degree animal cruelty in Fayette County District Court. The case goes back to March 2023, when authorities responded to a complaint about a neglected dog.

Dog Found in Unsafe Conditions

Crews from Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control arrived at a home on Pine Straw Court and found a pit bull mix without proper care. The dog had no access to food, water, or shelter and was shaking due to cold weather.

Officials said Coney initially denied owning the dog, but neighbours confirmed the animal, named Prince Ali, belonged to her.

Case Outcome

Coney was charged in March 2023 and later found guilty on April 10. She has been ordered to pay a $250 fine.

Dog’s Recovery and New Life

After being rescued, Prince Ali was placed in a new home. Since then, the dog has gained healthy weight and is now living in better conditions.

Animal Care & Control shared that this case shows why their work is important and that no animal should suffer neglect.
