A federal court in London has found a prison inmate guilty of attempted murder after a violent attack inside a high-security facility. The case highlights serious concerns about inmate behaviour and prison safety.
Conviction After Two-Day Trial
The accused, Mufid Elfgeeh, aged 42, was convicted by a federal jury following a two-day trial. The verdict comes after a brutal attack on his cellmate while he was already serving a long prison sentence.
Background of the Case
Elfgeeh was serving a 270-month (over 22 years) sentence for attempting to support a foreign terrorist organisation. The incident took place at United States Penitentiary McCreary.
Officials said he had earlier requested a private cell but became angry when the request was not granted.
Details of the Prison Attack
According to investigators, Elfgeeh used a makeshift weapon to carry out a violent assault on his cellmate.
- He stabbed the victim at least 30 times
- He ignored repeated orders from prison staff to stop
- The attack continued despite multiple control measures
Prison staff tried several methods to stop him, including:
- OC (pepper) spray
- OC vapor grenades
- Foam baton strikes
- Pepper balls
- Hornet nest munitions
Even after these efforts, the attack continued until specially equipped staff entered the cell, restrained him, and removed the weapon.
Authorities Involved in the Case
The case was announced by Jason Parman and Olivia Olson.
The investigation was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Pearce Nesbitt.
Possible Sentence and Next Hearing
Elfgeeh is scheduled to appear for sentencing on September 1, 2026. He could face up to 20 additional years in prison, depending on the court’s final decision.
