Hoboken, New Jersey, has accomplished a rare achievement for an American city: it has not recorded any traffic fatalities since January 17, 2017. This remarkable feat has been the result of consistent efforts and a strong focus on the safety of all road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists.
Why Hoboken is a Leader in Road Safety
According to Shia Levitt, in an article on Reasons to be Cheerful, an analysis of traffic accidents between 2014 and 2018 revealed alarming statistics. Even though pedestrians and cyclists were involved in only 8% of all crashes, they made up 40% of those that caused serious injuries or fatalities.
Furthermore, most of these accidents (88%) occurred at intersections, particularly in crosswalks, making these areas a priority for safety improvements.
Vision Zero Strategy for Safer Streets
Hoboken adopted the Vision Zero strategy, which is aimed at eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. The city focused its efforts on protecting the most vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those walking or cycling.
Key initiatives included safety projects around schools, parks, and senior centers, which are often busy with pedestrians and cyclists.
Key Safety Measures and Changes in Hoboken
To make roads safer, the city of Hoboken enforced a statewide law called “daylighting.” This law prevents vehicles from parking within 25 feet of intersections, ensuring drivers have a clear view of crossing pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, physical road barriers and improved crosswalk treatments were introduced to further enhance safety.
One of the most significant upgrades occurred in 2022, when the city made extensive improvements to its road infrastructure. The results were impressive: between 2022 and 2023, Hoboken experienced an 18% decrease in injury crashes and a 62% reduction in serious injuries.
Hoboken’s Road Safety: A Model for Other Cities
The city of Hoboken’s success story is an example for other urban areas aiming to improve road safety. By focusing on the most vulnerable road users and taking bold steps to redesign and enforce safer streets, Hoboken has proven that road safety can be improved with the right policies and dedication.
