An Ohio man has been given a long prison sentence after a brutal attack on his ex-wife that nearly cost her life.

Man Sentenced for Attempted Murder

Frederick L. Harroff, 66, pleaded guilty in March to multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, aggravated arson, felonious assault, kidnapping, and strangulation.

He was sentenced by Scott Washam in Columbiana County court to a minimum of 39 years in prison. The sentence could extend up to 44 and a half years depending on prison decisions.

Details of the Attack

The attack happened on June 2, 2025. The victim told the court that Harroff began the assault while she was in bed, hitting her with a baseball bat.

She said the violence continued for nearly an hour, during which he:

  • Tried to strangle her with a rope and his hands
  • Attempted to tie her up
  • Set the house on fire while threatening to kill them both

Despite serious injuries, the woman managed to escape and reach a neighbour’s home for help.

Arrest and Evidence

Police later found Harroff hiding in nearby woods, covered in blood and burn marks. Inside the home, officers discovered clear signs of the violent attack.

Courtroom Testimony

During sentencing, the victim described the incident as a fight for her life. Her statement had a strong impact on the court.

Judge Washam called the attack “vicious and horrific” and handed down a much longer sentence than prosecutors had requested.

Defendant’s Statement

Harroff told the court he did not intend to harm his ex-wife and claimed he was not in the right state of mind. He accepted responsibility but said he could not remember everything that happened.
