For Roman Anthony, the path to the majors almost changed completely after a disappointing moment in the 2022 MLB Draft.
Despite dominant high school numbers and major expectations, Anthony was not selected in the first round. The snub hit him hard. He later admitted he took it personally and even considered withdrawing from the draft to play college baseball instead.
At one point, he told his family he planned to attend Ole Miss, reset, and come back stronger in a future draft.

Everything changed when the Boston Red Sox selected him in the second round. Anthony was still unsure about signing, but his mother played a decisive role.
She encouraged him to take the opportunity, pointing out both the financial commitment and the organization’s investment in his future. That advice proved crucial.

Proving Himself in the Majors
Anthony quickly showed why he had first-round expectations. In 2025, he delivered key performances, including a walk-off hit against the Houston Astros.
He finished the season with a .292 average, eight home runs, and 32 RBIs in 71 games before an injury cut his year short. His contributions helped Boston reach the postseason.
Tough Start to 2026 Season
The new season has been more challenging. Anthony has struggled early, starting with just five hits in his first 22 at-bats. At one point, he went 1-for-18.
The Red Sox as a team have also struggled, opening the season 1-5 and dealing with both offensive and pitching issues. Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the slow start, saying the team needs to improve quickly.

Despite the rough start, Anthony has shown maturity. He emphasized that it’s too early to panic, noting that there is still a long season ahead.
