A heartbreaking incident in Pennsylvania has left a family and community in shock after a young boy lost his life in a hit-and-run crash involving a truck driver allegedly under the influence.
Fatal crash involving 9-year-old in Rochester, Pennsylvania
The tragic incident happened around 5 p.m. on Friday in Rochester, near Pennsylvania Avenue and Lacock Street. Nine-year-old Therman Wallace was riding his bicycle when a black truck allegedly turned right and struck him. According to reports, the impact was severe, and the driver did not stop after the collision.
Crash captured on video
Authorities stated that the crash was caught on surveillance video, which showed the truck hitting the child and continuing to drive away from the scene. The vehicle involved was later identified as being registered to Thomas Earl Cole, a 53-year-old man.
Police locate suspect at home
After responding to the scene, officers from the Rochester Police Department tracked down Thomas Earl Cole at his residence. According to the criminal complaint, officers noticed an odour of alcohol on his breath during their interaction.
Initially, Cole denied being on the road that day and questioned how he could be charged with DUI if he had been drinking at home.
Suspect changes his statement
Later, Cole reportedly changed his version of events. He admitted that he had been driving and was trying to find a way home due to a road closure.
He told police that while making a turn, he felt a bump but, after looking back, believed he had only hit a pile of rocks. This statement became a key part of the investigation.
Charges and legal action
Thomas Earl Cole has been charged with multiple serious offences, including vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, accidents involving death or personal injury, and DUI.
He was arrested and taken to the Beaver County Jail, where he is being held without bail. He was arraigned on Saturday and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 7.
Community grief and family response
The loss of Therman Wallace has deeply affected his family and the local community. A GoFundMe page created by his aunt described him as a bright and loving child whose life was taken far too soon.
The message also highlighted the pain his parents are facing and called on drivers to be more careful on the roads, especially where children are present.
This tragic case serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless and impaired driving. A young life was lost in an incident that might have been prevented with greater caution and responsibility.
As the legal process continues, the focus remains on seeking justice for Therman Wallace and supporting his grieving family. The incident also highlights the importance of road safety awareness, especially in residential areas where children are often present.
