A shocking case from Texas has left a community disturbed, as an elderly man has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing his own son. The incident reportedly followed a long history of family conflict, according to law enforcement officials.
Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting
In Lubbock County, 78-year-old Michael Vernie Owens has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his 37-year-old son, Michael Joseph Owens.
The case is being handled by the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, which confirmed the arrest and details of the incident.
Incident Reported Through 911 Call
Authorities say the incident happened on Wednesday evening at a home on 126th Street. Around 7:20 p.m., a 911 call was made—reportedly by the accused himself.
During the call, the elder Owens allegedly told dispatchers that he had shot and killed his son.
When deputies reached the location, they found the victim with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
What Led to the Incident
According to investigators, the accused told officers that there had been ongoing tension between him and his son.
He claimed:
- His son had been taking money from his bank account for months
- There had been previous threats and alleged assaults
- The situation had become stressful over time
On the day of the incident, the older Owens said he had gone to open a new bank account to protect his finances.
When he returned home, he claimed his son confronted him outside and allegedly made another threat.
Moment of the Shooting
The accused told authorities that during the confrontation, his son threatened him again and made a move toward him.
At that point, Owens allegedly used a firearm and shot his son. He later told investigators that he “snapped” or had reached his limit.
Custody and Legal Status
Following the incident, Owens was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
His bond has been set at $250,000. The case will now move forward through the legal system, where further investigation and court proceedings will determine the outcome.
