Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a fractured left thumb, which he sustained during last Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
The injury occurred when a foul tip from Chicago’s Austin Hays struck Kirk’s thumb, causing both dislocation and a fracture.
Expected Recovery Time
Manager John Schneider confirmed that Kirk, a two-time All-Star, is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, with the potential for his recovery to extend up to six weeks, depending on the progress of his healing.
Replacement and Impact
With Kirk out, the Blue Jays recalled Brandon Valenzuela from Triple-A Buffalo to serve as the backup catcher. Kirk’s absence will leave a significant gap in both the offensive and defensive lineup.
Last season, Kirk posted a .282 batting average, setting career-highs with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs. His defensive prowess behind the plate has also been a key asset for the team.
A Key Contributor to the Team
Schneider highlighted Kirk’s unique abilities on both sides of the ball, stating, “What he can do on both sides of the ball is pretty unique.” Kirk, 27, was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and was selected for the American League team again in 2025.
In addition, Kirk earned a Silver Slugger award in 2022 after hitting .285 with 14 home runs and 63 RBIs.
Kirk recently played for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic before returning to the Blue Jays for the start of the season.
