Two Texas brothers, Enrique and Romeo Aguilar, have been charged in connection with the tragic shooting death of 17-year-old Mariah Alatorre after a party on Valentine’s Day. The incident has raised multiple questions, especially surrounding the victim’s medical care and the events leading up to her death.
The Fatal Incident
Enrique Aguilar, 19, is charged with murder for allegedly shooting Mariah, while his 18-year-old brother, Romeo Aguilar, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. The incident unfolded just after midnight on February 14, 2026, during a party attended by roughly 300 people on Dagg Road in south Houston.
According to authorities, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at around 12:30 a.m. When police arrived, gunshots rang out, and several individuals fled the scene.
Mariah was rushed to a nearby hospital by a friend, but instead of going to a hospital in the area, she was taken to an urgent care center nearly 40 miles north in Cypress, before being transferred to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, where she later died from her injuries.
Unanswered Questions
Mariah’s mother, devastated by the circumstances, questioned why her daughter was driven so far for medical attention and expressed her frustration about the lack of answers. “What happened between those hours?” she asked, searching for clarity on the events of that night. Mariah’s tragic death was compounded by the confusion surrounding her delayed medical treatment.
The victim was fondly remembered in her obituary as a “funny, caring, and deeply loving soul” who had a beautiful heart and was always there for her family.
Her mother, in an emotional interview, shared that she had been trying to reach Mariah all night and eventually traced her daughter’s cellphone to the urgent care facility, only to be told, “Mariah has been shot.”
Investigation and Arrests
After more than two months, authorities have arrested the Aguilar brothers, charging Enrique with the murder of Mariah and Romeo with possession of a prohibited weapon. During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors suggested that after leaving the party, Mariah, along with her friends—including Enrique—was driven to the urgent care clinic.
While parked, Enrique reportedly began playing with a gun, which resulted in the fatal shooting. Enrique claimed the shooting was an accident, but the judge in the case dismissed this explanation, stating, “I don’t see how someone accidentally shoots someone multiple times,” referring to video evidence showing Enrique leaning over Mariah and laughing.
Family’s Reaction
Mariah’s family, in their grief, expressed their deep sense of betrayal, saying she had trusted Enrique, a person they now believe was unworthy of that trust. “She trusted the wrong people,” Mariah’s mother said, revealing the painful realization that the victim’s trust had been misplaced.
Legal Proceedings and Bonds
Both Enrique and Romeo Aguilar were arrested by the District 1 Crime Reduction Unit and the Violent Criminals Apprehension Team and are now in custody at the Harris County Jail.
Enrique is being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on June 11, 2026. Romeo is being held on a $30,000 bond, with his court appearance set for Friday.
The case continues to unfold, with the community and Mariah’s family eagerly awaiting justice for the young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
