In a surprising turn of events, Doug Nikhazy has been claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox after the Cleveland Guardians designated him for assignment last week.
Nikhazy, who had been a part of the Guardians’ system for several years, was sent directly to Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox, giving him a new opportunity in the major leagues.
A Short Stint with the Guardians
Nikhazy’s time in the majors has been brief, with his lone appearance coming last season in two games for the Guardians. He allowed six earned runs in three innings during his debut against the Boston Red Sox last April, and later had a scoreless inning of relief against the Detroit Tigers on July 4.
Although he showed promise, Nikhazy’s career with the Guardians was limited by a 5.02 ERA last season, which came with a high walk rate and low strikeout rate. His role with the team became uncertain as other pitchers, like Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee, rose through the ranks, and Kolby Allard took up a longman role in the bullpen.
