Washington, D.C. authorities arrested nearly a dozen juveniles over the weekend following a series of “teen takeovers,” where large groups of young people were involved in street brawls and assaults on police officers.
The Events Leading to Arrests
The disturbances began around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when police responded to several incidents within the southwest area of the city. FOX 5 reported that groups of teens gathered between the Navy Yard curfew zone and the Wharf, both located just blocks from the designated curfew zones for the weekend.
One local resident described the situation, saying, “They’re coming from Maryland, they’re coming from Virginia, they’re coming from all over just to be disrespectful here in Ward Six, we’re like some ‘Meeting Zone.’”
Details of the Incidents
The first altercation occurred in the 1300 block of Canal Street, where officers arrested a 17-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl. Shortly after, another fight broke out near First Street and N Street SW, leading to the arrest of a 15-year-old boy who allegedly assaulted a police officer.
Around 9 p.m., a larger altercation erupted in the same area, with several juveniles reportedly attacking officers. This led to the arrest of two girls, aged 15 and 16, for fighting in public.
More Arrests and Charges
Additionally, two 14-year-olds—one boy and one girl—were arrested on charges including assaulting a police officer, fighting, and resisting arrest.
The ongoing disturbances were part of a series of incidents that contributed to the increased tension in the city’s southwest area during the weekend.
