Nolan Schanuel’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning scored the winning run as the Los Angeles Angels triumphed over the Seattle Mariners 8-7 on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, California.
Key Moments in the Game
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams scoring in extra innings. After Shaun Anderson (1-0) struck out Cal Raleigh with the bases loaded to end the top of the 11th, the Angels took advantage of the extra inning rules.
With Adam Frazier starting at second base, Gabe Speier (0-2) intentionally walked Zach Neto to set up the game-winning opportunity. Oswald Peraza’s sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, and Schanuel lifted a fly ball to left field, allowing Frazier to score the game-winning run.
Exciting Extra-Inning Action
In the 10th inning, both teams managed to score. Randy Arozarena’s single to right gave the Mariners a 7-6 lead, but the Angels quickly responded. Automatic runner Jo Adell advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Teodosio and scored on Logan O’Hoppe’s sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 7-7.
The Mariners nearly won in the ninth with a two-out rally. Cal Raleigh doubled to left, then scored when Julio Rodriguez hit a broken-bat single on a 2-2 slider from Sam Bachman to tie the game at 6-6.
Trout’s Injury
The Angels’ Mike Trout left the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after being hit on the left hand by a pitch from Casey Legumina, raising concerns about his status moving forward.
Scoring Breakdown
The Angels took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with Zach Neto’s double and Jorge Soler’s two-out single. Seattle answered in the second with Leo Rivas’ two-run single, putting the Mariners ahead 2-1.
In the third, the Angels tied it as Trout doubled and scored on Soler’s single. Los Angeles then took a 4-2 lead in the fourth, aided by Rivas’ fielding error and Schanuel’s infield single. The Mariners regained the lead in the fifth with a three-run homer by Cole Young, making it 5-4.
The Angels responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice. Jeimer Candelario’s double set up Adell’s single to tie the game at 5-5, and Adell came around to score the go-ahead run on a grounder by Frazier that got under Rivas’ glove, making it 6-5.
Pitching Performances
Angels right-hander George Klassen, making his MLB debut after starter Ryan Johnson was scratched due to illness, lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits, with five walks and four strikeouts.
Mariners starter Luis Castillo also had a rough outing, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four.
