Davis Martin pitched six strong innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the series. Martin (2-0) allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
After Martin’s exit, Bryan Hudson and Jordan Leasure held the Blue Jays scoreless over the next two innings, and Chris Murphy worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn the save.
Key Performances
The White Sox offense was led by Austin Hays, Miguel Vargas, and Lenyn Sosa, each of whom drove in one run. Luisangel Acuña contributed two hits to the winning effort.
For the Blue Jays, Ernie Clement was the standout hitter, recording two hits in the losing effort. However, Toronto struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-6 in those situations and dropping their fourth consecutive game.
Scoring Summary
The White Sox got on the board early in the first inning against Blue Jays’ starter Eric Lauer (1-1). Chase Meidroth led off with a double to left field and scored on Vargas’ two-out liner that bounced past Daulton Varsho in center field for a triple.
Toronto had a chance to respond in the third inning when Andres Gimenez walked, and Brandon Valenzuela singled in his first major league at-bat. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walking to load the bases, Addison Barger grounded out to shortstop. Tanner Murray, in his MLB debut, made an excellent play to end the threat.
Pitching and Defensive Highlights
Lauer, who was initially scheduled to pitch on Saturday but was delayed due to illness, lasted just two-plus innings. He gave up two runs, two hits, and three walks before being replaced by Austin Voth in the third inning after a leadoff walk to Munetaka Murakami. Voth allowed an RBI double to Sosa in the same inning.
In the fourth, Acuña singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on Hays’ single to right, giving the White Sox a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Jays continued to threaten, but the White Sox bullpen kept them off the scoreboard. Hudson and Leasure shut down the Blue Jays in the seventh, and Murphy finished the game with a save.
Injury and Roster Moves
Barger seemed to be uncomfortable after running out his ground ball in the third inning and was replaced in right field by Jesus Sanchez in the sixth inning. In a roster move prior to the game, the Blue Jays optioned pitchers Lazaro Estrada and Brendon Little to Triple-A Buffalo and promoted Joe Mantiply and Voth.
