A Kentucky couple will spend nearly two decades in prison after being convicted in a disturbing child abuse case that shocked the community.
Couple Sentenced in Child Abuse Case
Jerome Norman and Mary Hall, both 44, entered an Alford plea in March on charges of first-degree criminal abuse. This type of plea allows defendants to maintain innocence while accepting that the evidence could likely lead to a conviction.
Final Sentence and Court Decision
In Pike Circuit Court, Judge Eddy Coleman sentenced both defendants to:
- 20 years for first-degree criminal abuse
- Two additional five-year sentences for lesser charges
All sentences will run at the same time, meaning each will serve just under 20 years. They must complete 85% of their sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
How the Case Came to Light
The case began in January 2025 after a child returned to school following winter break showing serious signs of neglect, including malnourishment, bruises, and a chipped tooth. This led to a report and an investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
Details of Abuse
Investigators found that children in the home were kept in a locked room with boarded windows. Authorities described the conditions as severe and intentional.
According to Bill Slone, one child was “practically starved” for weeks. The children were also reportedly forced to do manual labour and were punished by being denied food.
Impact on the Children
Officials said the children suffered long-term harm, including emotional trauma and developmental delays. A social worker described clear signs of prolonged suffering, while a physician stated that food was used as punishment, calling it a form of torture.
Background of the Case
Mary Hall had taken custody of the children after a family tragedy in 2018. The situation reportedly worsened after she began living with Norman in 2023.
