A heartbreaking case from California has brought attention to the dangers of reckless and drunk driving. A father is now facing serious charges after a high-speed crash led to the death of his teenage son.
Man Charged After Fatal Crash
In Monterey County, 37-year-old Edgar Banuelos has been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly car accident.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the crash claimed the life of his 16-year-old son, Edgar Jeremiah Banuelos-Gonzalez.
Details of the Incident
Authorities say the accident happened on April 3 along Meridian Road, near Revilla Drive. Investigators believe Banuelos was driving at extremely high speed—around 100 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Police report that:
- He lost control of the vehicle
- The car went off the road and hit a tree
- The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire
Tragically, the teenage boy died in the crash.
Other Children Injured
At the time of the accident, three children were inside the vehicle. While the 16-year-old lost his life, his two younger brothers, aged 14 and 7, survived.
They were taken to a hospital in San Jose with moderate injuries. Banuelos himself also suffered major injuries.
Serious Charges Filed
Prosecutors have filed multiple charges against Banuelos, including:
- Second-degree murder
- Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated
- Three counts of child abuse
Officials say alcohol was found in his system, and his driving behaviour showed a serious disregard for safety.
Court Proceedings and Bail
Banuelos has pleaded not guilty in court. He is currently being held in the Monterey County Jail on a bail of $1.4 million.
His next court appearance is scheduled for May 6.
Family Responds to Tragedy
The children’s mother, Jessica Gonzalez, has shared emotional messages following the incident.
She has asked the community for understanding and forgiveness, saying there is no place for hate. She also expressed sadness over the serious charges against the father, describing him as someone who cared deeply for his children.
She remembered her son as a joyful and loving boy who always brought happiness to others.
