Energy Secretary Chris Wright has raised alarms about California’s lack of energy production, stating that it could pose a national security risk.
He has also criticized California’s political leadership, including Governor Gavin Newsom, for creating an “energy-starved island” by importing oil and gas from countries like Iraq and Brazil, when California has its own resources.
California’s Energy Problems and National Security
Wright expressed concerns about California’s reliance on foreign oil and how it affects national security, particularly for military operations based in the state. He pointed out that California should be a key player in supplying energy to assets across the Pacific Ocean but is instead struggling due to political decisions.
Energy Prices and California’s Oil Industry
California has the highest gasoline prices in the United States, with regular gas costing $5.93 per gallon. Wright claims that these high prices are the result of political decisions rather than a lack of resources.
He emphasized that California once ranked as one of the top three oil producers in the country but has seen its energy industry decline in recent years due to political restrictions.
The Cost of Energy for Californians
The rising cost of energy, both gasoline and electricity, is hurting residents. Wright argues that California citizens should not have to pay more than 50% higher gasoline prices and nearly double the electricity prices compared to other states.
A Call for Cooperation
Wright stated that the Trump administration is open to working with California’s leadership to revive the state’s energy production and secure its future. He emphasized that this is essential not only for California but also for national security and the economy.
Governor Newsom’s Response
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office dismissed Wright’s concerns, stating that he is a “fossil fuel lobbyist” pushing for policies that could harm Americans with issues like asthma, toxic exposure, and black lung disease.
