New York Mets fan favourite Bartolo Colon gets Baseball United nod

New York Mets fans will not have to wait long to see a fan favourite take the diamond for Baseball United.

The league is going to begin with a pair of All Star Games on November 24th and 25th. Each of the four teams will have representatives on the East and West squads. It is the East team that may get the most eyes as former major leaguer Bartolo Colon will start the first game.

Former New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon still chugging along

Colon is 50 years old now. He has not pitched in the majors since 2018, but had still been active through 2021. He pitched in the Mexican League that year, a 48 year old toiling on the mound because he loved the game. It appeared as though he had hung up the cleats for good as he had not pitched in the past two seasons, and even had his retirement ceremony with the Mets earlier in the year.

But there is something to be said for the love of the game. Colon, despite being 50 years old, is willing to travel to the Middle East, adding his talents to a startup league hoping to spread the game to a new area. It is a perfect place for him, a place where his genuine appreciation and love of baseball can shine through. His stature as a fan favourite will help win over converts as Baseball United looks to grow.

Colon is not going to return to the majors, even with a strong showing in Dubai. Those days are long in past, a pleasant memory capped off by the highlight of the most improbable homer ever. But his presence means that people will pay attention. And it also means that the fans will get at least one more chance to see Colon in action.

Former New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon will take the ball in the first Baseball United game. We get to see him for at least one more time.
