New York Yankees end Domingo German’s rollercoaster season

Domingo German has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows this season. And now, the New York Yankees pitcher is done for the year.

The Yankees announced on Wednesday that German has been placed on the Restricted List, ending his 2023 season. He is undergoing treatment for alcohol abuse and will be away from the team during that time.

Domingo German had interesting season for New York Yankees

German’s season was quite the rollercoaster. He had been suspended for ten games for violating MLB’s crackdown on foreign substances on the ball. On June 22, he allowed ten runs, eight earned, in just 3.1 innings. Then, in his next outing on June 28, he fired the 24th perfect game in MLB history. He had been scheduled to start on August 1, only to have the Yankees change plans because of “soreness.” Then German entered as a reliever for the final five innings. Now, he is entering treatment for his problems with alcohol.

His overall results reflect those highs and lows. German ends the 2023 season with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.077 WHiP over his 108.2 innings, striking out 114 batters with 34 walks. Those numbers were slightly better than one could have expected as he allowed 20 homers and a 41.4% hard hit rate this season.

Anything on the diamond can wait at this point. What is important is that German gets the help that he needs to overcome his problems with alcohol. Hopefully, with proper treatment and support, he can return to the Yankees and be a productive piece of the rotation.
