There was a time when Alcantara appeared to have a bright future with the Cubs. He had been considered a potential five tool prospect with plenty of power, a strong arm, and excellent speed. His athleticism made him likely to stick in center for the long term with the Cubs regarding him as a possible impact player.

That time has ended after one season. The Cubs had previously suspended Alcantara for violating team rules, but went a step further with his release. Although he had been handed a $500,000 signing bonus, the fourth highest the franchise handed out in the 2022 international signing period, they had enough. Alcantara had to go.

Unfortunately for Alcantara, that is a realization that came far too late. A person was killed and his career may be over as a result of his actions.
